The first thing you want to consider when buying a new computer is what you need your computer to be able to do.

  • Budget Priced Computer--will handle the same basic applications as mid-priced computers, but some tasks will take longer and the machine in general usually runs a bit slower.

  • Mid-Priced Computers--are great for a general list of activities such as surfing the Internet, e-mail, playing a few games, managing your checkbook, downloads, digital music, and writing papers.

  • Gamers--should buy a computer with the fastest processor and graphics card they can afford.

  • Video Editing or Desktop Publishing--purchase a system with a fast processor, a large hard drive, and a graphics card loaded with lots of memory.

  • Business Accounting--all of the major computer manufacturers offer a line of business systems that you might want to consider. I've noticed that the business models seems to be built better and last longer than computers designed for home use.

  • Special Needs--you might want to purchase a voice synthesizer or one-handed keyboard.

  • Specific Software--make sure the computer you select meets the specifications listed on the box of the software you want to use.

  • Specialized Peripheral Devices--make sure your computer can accommodate any devices you want to use.
After you know what you want in a computer, I suggest visiting your local electronics retailers to take a look around and take note of the brand and model of a couple of PCs you might be interested in purchasing.

I would then go home and Google the brand and model numbers you wrote down when you were in the store. If you see lots and lots of complaints you might want to consider another model. Also take note of what consumers say about how the manufacturer treated them when they called for service or help. I assure you that no brand and model of computer will be completely without complaint, but if you see large numbers of complaints you should be wary.

Write down the the online price of the computers you are interested in. Also, check other stores in your town to see who has the best price. Best Buy isn't the only store that sells computers. Sam's Club, Costco, hhgregg, Staples, Office Max, and Office Depot also sell computers.

If you decide to purchase from Best Buy, go to their website first and check to see what the online price for the computer is. Best Buy has a habit of charging less for the same product online. If it is less online than it is in the store, you can go to the store and ask customer service to price match the computer for you. They will let you buy the computer for the online price in the store.  The
other retailers may also price match their online price but I'm not sure.
